Garden roses

This is our second year of garden roses and I love having fresh flowers in the house!  My favorites so far are St Cecilia and Queen of Sweden.

Bearded Irises

I think these bearded irises were really popular 30-40 years ago because each spring, you can spot these welcome visitors in the yards of almost every house on our street.

New flowers

Every year we succumb to buying these gorgeous hydrangeas and every year they are unsuccessful!  Any tips?  Are these just doomed in the hot Texas weather?

Roses from our garden

Just popping in to show off our rose bounty from this week!  After our initial disappointment in trying to grow peonies, I'm so glad BK found these rose varieties that are doing amazingly well in our little garden.  Hope everyone is well and having a great holiday season!

St. Cecilia

Our favorite garden rose!  I love how full it is (almost like a peony -- my favorite flower!) -- and it is so fragrant!

New flowers

My mother-in-law gave us an assortment of flower bulbs from her own garden this year and it's been fun to see what flowers have been popping up all over our yard.  These gladilous bloomed just recently and were a welcome surprise.

Around the garden late May

Twin calla lilies!

BK built these flower boxes for the backyard and we had a lot of fun ordering heirloom roses to plant in them.  It's been fun to see these bloom and each time we get a new flower, we proclaim it our favorite.

Around the garden: Early May

We potted new flowers and succulents for the patio this past weekend

The vegetable garden is doing well.  We had to get rid of the spaghetti squash--it kind of outgrew the space I think, then suddenly died.  Now I think the cherry tomatoes will take over.

Cucumbers

My mother in law gave us flower bulbs from her garden and we were so excited to see the first one bloom--a calla lily!

Around the garden: early April edition

Our first rose has bloomed!  La Reine Victoria

The vegetable garden is going well--first signs of cherry tomatoes

And our newest member for the salsa garden: a lime tree!

How's your garden doing this week?

Around the garden...

Spring is here! (and spring showers as well!) We've been potting little succulents for the patio.

Planting new roses, peonies and ranunculus

And started our vegetable garden! It's going to mainly be a 'salsa' garden this year with Roma tomatoes, Serrano peppers and cilantro.  We added some cucumbers and spaghetti squash for good measure as well.  Can't wait to see how they grow!  Are you doing any planting this spring?

Around the garden

Here are some pictures from around our garden this lovely spring!

We planted this gingko tree last fall and are excited to see new leaves!

Some flower hanging baskets in the back yard

And we started a strawberry patch this year too!

March showers bring April flowers

We've had a rainy and cool spring so far and B and I have been hard at work gardening various portions of our front and back yard.  It's exciting to plan and plant flowers and know that we'll (hopefully) see them year after year.

Since this is our first spring in our new house, we were pleasantly surprised to inherit some really lovely flowers.  We spotted several sword shaped leaves arranged in a fan shape sprouting in a garden bed in the back yard and soon found these gorgeous irises--in yellow, purple and white.  We've seen several around the neighborhood too and wonder how long everyone's had them in their gardens.

We also have this great rose bush that is flowering like crazy near the back gate.

Last weekend was spent clearing out and replanting one of the front flowerbeds with some Geraniums and Knockout Roses.  Hopefully they'll grow well and flower even more throughout the year.

And we also found a nice shady spot with just enough morning sun to try our hand at some hydrangea bushes.  If we have a good year or two we might just try our hand at my favorite peonies next!
